One of the most daunting tasks of moving home is packing your belongings into boxes to be moved. You should begin this task as soon as possible, to leave plenty of time before leaving your old property.
You may decide to do this task yourself, or ask a professional moving company to do the packing and carrying for you. Some removal companies can pack just your glassware and crockery, leaving you to handle the less fragile items in your home. Ask your removal company exactly what they expect of you before you book the visit.
Doing your own packing doesn't need to be a difficult task. The following guidelines will help ensure you have a safe and smooth move.
Choosing the right boxes
There are hundreds of different style packing boxes depending on their use, and you should carefully select the boxes you require. Use these tips to select packing boxes:
- Large boxes should be used for collections of light items, such as pillows
- Smaller boxes are designed to carry heavy items, such as books and plates
- Use double-walled boxes for extra durability
- Use "modular boxes" - designed to be stacked in the van safely and securely
Your removal company may provide these boxes, or you might wish to purchase your own.
Packing the boxes
First, unfold the flat-pack box and securely tape the bottom of the box along the centre of the flaps, and along each side. Now carefully select which items will go in each box:
- Try to keep it organized - you'll thank yourself when you unpack in your new home!
- Place heavier items at the bottom, and lighter items on top
- Regularly check that you can still lift the box as you pack
- Wrap fragile items in tissue paper, newspaper, bubble wrap, or secure them between soft items such as pillows and cuddly toys
- Carefully wrap/enclose sharp knives and dangerous objects - preferably in an old biscuit tin or similar
- Make sure lids and tops are securely fastened to prevent leakage
- Never pack flammable items such as paraffin - it will not be allowed in the lorry
- Fill boxes right to the top - this provides a strong base for other boxes stacked on top
Furniture and clothing
Most furniture can be carried to the lorry as it stands. Make sure large items such as wardrobes and bed bases can safely fit through the doors - if not you may need to dismantle them. Keep an envelope or small bag of screws and tools so you can easily erect them at your new property.
Often removal staff won't mind if drawers contain belongings, but remove heavy items first and securely tape the drawers closed to prevent them spilling during moving.
Special boxes can be used for clothing - strong cardboard with a hanging bar similar to a wardrobe. Most clothing can simply be folded and placed in boxes.
